You’re probably wondering why I’m telling you about summer travel as we’re in the middle of Spring Break. Well, the answer is because most companies are seeing record bookings for travel to many destinations over the summer. This is leading to some interesting, and unpresented trends at the moment. If you are hoping to take an adventure and make memories with your family over the summer months, I really want you to be prepared. Keep reading to learn more!
Many European Countries already have limited availability
Many of the Western European countries are seeing record breaking bookings. Italy is back on top of the most popular travel destinations for Americans. If you are hoping to visit areas like the Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast, you can expect very limited options at this point. Other popular countries are France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. With this limited availability, is coming extremely high costs. The budget you used five years ago is definitely a thing of the past.
Airfare is SO high!
If you found yourself looking at airfare costs recently, you will know that it’s wild! It’s not uncommon to find flights to destinations in Europe for over $2000/person in coach class. This really needs to be taken into account when you are budgeting for your travels this summer! We try to mitigate that where possible, but even with package pricing and traveling “off-days”, airfare is going to eat up a huge chunk of your budget.
The workforce shortage is impacting the travel industry globally
When traveling in many destinations this summer that rely on public transportation, please note that there have been VERY frequent strikes. This can impact airports, subway systems, and buses. We do try to keep you updated on these issues, but just be ready to be flexible, and try not to over plan! I cannot emphasize enough how we all just need to travel with a bit more patience these days.
Possibly consider a less popular summer travel destination
The world is large, so don’t forget about some of the other amazing destinations you could travel to. Maybe it’s time for that trip to Panama or Peru. Central and South America haven’t recovered from COVID quite as quickly as Europe, so let’s find other destinations that seem interesting to you and your family. If you want to lessen some of the travel stresses, maybe consider a cruise instead (Europe and Alaska have great summer sailings still available).Or, a river cruise could alleviate the need for much of the additional travel while you’re floating down the river in your floating hotel. Sometimes taking steps out is the best option.
Still just take the trip
If we have learned anything these past few years, it’s that life is short and we just need to live our lives to the fullest each and every day. We are here to help plan your vacation for the summer, and we promise to do our best to ensure you are prepared for what to expect (and for the unexpected as well).
